Great Lakes Forever is a public education initiative designed to connect Great Lakes residents with the many ways we all depend on the lakes. We provide clear, non-biased, scientifically accurate information to the general public to help them become better informed about how wonderful yet vulnerable the Great Lakes are.
Great Lakes Forever provides not only basic education but also information about simple things individuals can do to combat pollution, invasive species and to conserve water. We explain why these actions are important and they can make a difference in the health of the lakes.
A creation of the Biodiversity Project , this program is working to raise the profile of important, but poorly understood Great Lakes issues, such as: polluted run-off, groundwater depletion and invasive species.
The program combines several communications components in an effort to reach the public on these issues: educational advertising (print and radio,) point-of-experience signs (at lakefront areas,) and Web-based outreach.
The program, initially launched in 2004, expanded in 2005 with the support of the John G. Shedd Aquarium and other Chicago and regional partners. Great Lakes Forever and its partners and advisors share a common desire to create a broader, more engaged constituency that sees reasons to get involved in protecting the Great Lakes.
More than 20 U.S. and Canadian advisors are involved in the Great Lakes Forever campaign, including the Chicago-based Alliance for the Great Lakes , Chicago Wilderness and the John G. Shedd Aquarium.
